Self-advocacy involves taking control over one's own life and the public dialogue relating to one's community. ASAN chapters work to advance both types of self-advocacy. Some chapters prefer to focus on public advocacy work, such as in areas where existing groups meet the social and community needs of Autistic adults. Other chapters have chosen to play a community and social function as well as an advocacy role.
ASAN chapters that have regular meetings with a social/support component include the Portland, Oregon chapter; the New York City chapter; the Dallas, Texas chapter; the Los Angeles/UCLA chapter; the New England chapter, which meets in the Boston area; and the Central Ohio chapter, which meets on the Ohio State University campus in Columbus, Ohio. New members are welcome to attend the meetings. Please refer to our chapter information page for group leaders' contact addresses. The Texas chapter also maintains a social/support listserv, moderated by Chapter Director Melody Latimer, for members in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.
An online social support group for parents and stepparents who are on the autism spectrum, along with their spouses/partners, can be found here. Those who are contemplating having a child are also welcome to join. This list is moderated by Texas Chapter Director Melody Latimer, is open to all autistic parents and their spouses whether or not they live in Texas, and is intended as a resource to help autistic parents understand themselves and to promote healthy relationships between parents and their children.
